Moshi Monsters in Beta

November 24th, 2007 · No Comments · Design, Social Network Site, Web Design

We’ve been busy here at Mind Candy and this week we launched Moshi Monster’s in beta!

Currently (at least, while the game is in beta) the way into the game is to purchase a ‘MoPod‘ mobile phone charm, inside the packaging is a secret code allowing you to adopt a monster. These MoPod’s are available from Mind Candy founder Michael Smith’s other company, Firebox.

Adoption of a Moshi Monster involves choosing a monster from a variety of monsters ranging from the ultra-cute little pink furry monsters to zombie-style scary monsters, then coloring and naming it. Meet my monster here: http://www.moshimonsters.com/monsters/icet

Once you’ve adopted a Monster the fun really begins as you can do the daily dose of puzzle challenges, which earn you ‘rox’ (the game currency). Rox’s allow you to buy stuff in Monstro City. You can buy stuff to decorate your Monster room, feed them, etc My monster is a big fan of the ‘Eyescream Sundae’ and the ‘Goblin Gateaux’ while I prefer to spend ‘our’ Rox on decorating our room with ‘Cuddle Humans’.

As Moshi Monsters is still in beta there are, as the game interface reveals, a few features marked as “coming soon” – A ‘Friends Tree’, ‘The Pinboard’ and ‘The News’ feed.

The Telegraph’s article on ‘Children’s social-networking sites: set your little monsters loose online’ give an interesting description of the game: ‘Billed as a cross between Facebook and the popular “virtual pet” game Tamagotchi, Moshi Monsters is a group of super-cute – or tamely scary, depending on which one you pick – monsters set to enthral the younger generation.

The online game comprises exactly what has captivated adults – browser-based gaming and social networking – but is aimed at the first generation to have grown up alongside, and completely at ease with, both the internet and the concept of virtual reality gaming…’

Wish me luck with today’s puzzle! : )
